On the fifth day, another chapter of this remarkable experience came to life through a meeting with Prof. Naoyuki Kawahara, an academic at Kyushu University, physician, former Japanese diplomat, and one of the pioneers of humanitarian and medical work in Africa.
The meeting was more than a lecture on healthcare in Africa. It was an opportunity for students to learn about a unique professional and humanitarian journey that brought together science, medicine, diplomacy, and humanitarian action. Prof. Kawahara worked as a physician and diplomatic official at the Japanese Embassies in Tanzania and Sudan before dedicating a significant part of his career to healthcare and humanitarian work in Africa.
What made the experience even more meaningful was that the students did not hear about these experiences from just one perspective. They also met representatives and individuals from African countries, listening to their experiences and perspectives on the realities of healthcare and African communities, as well as the role that international expertise can play in providing support and fostering cooperation.
